How can I purchase stocks without going through a brokerage?

David asked: I want to buy some stocks on a budget ($300) but I don’t want to join a brokerage or anything. I want to purchase stocks and just keep them. Any information as to how and where would be greatly appreciated.Gen Beaudoin
